I am delighted to announce that I have been invited to exhibit my Sphere at the CLAP Museum in Pescara, in the major retrospective dedicated to Will Eisner, father of the modern graphic novel.
Eisner portrayed the city like no one else: rooftops, alleys, rain, shadows, panels that flow like the sequences of a film. From this world comes The Spirit Becomes Matter: five new Sphere, built from layers of reclaimed plexiglass and patented materials. Reacting to light, they change colour and depth depending on the point of view: like a comic page, they are read by moving. Five Sphere, five visions: City, Motion, Shadow, Frame, Spirit.
The Sphere will have a dedicated wall in the main hall, in dialogue with one hundred original pages by Eisner, from 1942 to 2004: from Joe Dope to The Spirit, from A Contract with God to The Plot, his last graphic novel. Exhibiting the Sphere in a show devoted to comics is both an honour and a challenge for me: taking Eisner’s language off the page and into space, and translating his narrative rhythm into sculptures where matter, light and movement turn comics into an emotional experience.
The exhibition is promoted and organised by Fondazione Pescarabruzzo and CLAP Museum, in agreement with the Eisner family. It is curated by Denis Kitchen, Eisner’s publisher, agent and friend, and Dario Gulli, international author and producer and Editorial Director of SAE Comics, who builds projects where comics, animation, design and publishing meet.
I look forward to seeing you at the opening on Saturday 28 November, in the presence of Denis Kitchen and Dario Gulli.
